The gleaming light of the Tuscany sky transformed to be even more and more transparent. Romy and Peter stood both admiring the cypress trees on top of a hill, when they decided to say farewell to there software business and marketing plans at there Swiss working places. They were willing to avoid all the big European city cultures for going back to the roots. To the roots? Observing the beautiful vineyards of Tuscany they remembered their ancestors, which only one hundred years ago were farmers. Pete’s in the Franconian part of Germany and Romy’s on country side near Zürich. What then should prevent them to find out what they had inherited from their ancestors talents? After twenty successful years in industry and banking one could surely change the job from offices to vineyards. So, the decision was made: within five years they would become wine farmers. As you already know, not in Tuscany but in Piedmont. Peter followed the advices of friends by choosing the jewel of the Nebbiolo Region for their new working place.

The choice of producing a top wine was the challenge. Peter had ever since – even in the tender age of 16 years – collected wines. He was helped by his extraordinary memory: he tested the wine by storing most exactly the label as well as the perfume, the faults and the year of degustation and vintage. He did read books about wine like children were once used to read comics or musicians read scores. His way of learning has not changed until the present day.

He choose Romy because she was understanding his passion: he wouldn’t have to explain everything from crash... Within the years both of them realized that all their closest friends lived in Italy. Not anymore in Switzerland but in the Barolo County, and of course all of them were winemakers.

Cascina Ebreo with his southeastern oriented vineyards was bought in 1991 after the terroir was inspected well by their winemaking old friends. The contract was made two month after the first inspection. The first step was done!

Then the work was beginning.

1993 Peter and Romy burned all the boats and moved south with horses, dogs and cats. It was the end of March and the 200 years old house in Novello had to be rebuilt, cellars had to be added. At the same time they had to replant the vineyards because these were an awful jungle, and hadn’t been worked for seven years. One wasn’t even able to find the Nebbiolo plants. It was quite sad to see how the excavators rooted out the old knobby vines, which had brought good wines for so many years. But doing this, there were also advantages: the new farmers would grew with their wines and learned how to treat the plants and how hard the work in the vineyard really was!

Already at the beginning of the story, Peter had the “picture” of his future wine exactly in his mind. He would produce a great Barolo, and a very typical Barbera of a region which was known for great Barberas since hundred of years. Further he would make an experiment: some Sauvignons and Semillons would produce a powerful white wine.

From the beginning until now Peters challenges were the vineyards and the cellars, while Romy was running around building sites, calling after architects, plumbers, joiners and running from one Italian burocracy to the next. Afterwards she was working in the vineyards like all the other women in the region.

So the years were passing by with hard work and no financial returns until in 1996 finally their first wine was in the bottles. They were exactly where they wished!
