Segreto means “secret” in the Italian language. It
is a cuvee pf 95-100% Barbera and about 5% of Nebbiolo. Its vinification is
very similar to the Torbido with a shorter time in oak barrels (18-21
months). Beside the tonneaux of 600
litres we also use barriques (225 Liters) for the Segreto. It is bottled
without filtration and stays at least one year in the bottle before coming on
the market.
The Nebbiolo gives the “heart” to the Barbera
and the power, which makes a real sensation out of the wonderful fruit of the
Barbera grapes. Segreto is growing on a large hill near our home. This hill was
famous for excellent Barbera ever since, but for at least 200 years.
The position is Southeast and the highest three
rows are Nebbiolo. Both of the grapes are harvested at the same time, very late,
and we also macerate the grapes together.
